column_border_width=&#8221;none&#8221; column_border_style=&#8221;solid&#8221;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221; text_direction=&#8221;default&#8221;]\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/univergysolar.com\/integracion-soluciones-v2g-para-recarga-bidireccional\/\"> electric vehicle lithium-ion batteries<\/a> <\/strong>lose roughly <strong>20 % to 30 % of their original capacity<\/strong>, they cease to be optimal for mobility but still retain enough performance for <strong>stationary applications.<\/strong> Harnessing this <strong>remaining margin<\/strong> transforms what would otherwise be a problematic waste into a <strong>valuable resource<\/strong> that helps sustain the growth of <strong>renewable generation.<\/strong> <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Before a <strong>second-life<\/strong> battery can become part of a <strong>BESS<\/strong>, it must undergo a rigorous <strong>diagnostic <\/strong>process to determine its <strong>state of health<\/strong> and <strong>remaining capacity<\/strong>. <strong>Charge and discharge tests<\/strong> analyze parameters such as <strong>internal resistance<\/strong> and <strong>cell uniformity. <\/strong>Once each module\u2019s <strong>performance <\/strong>is identified, units with similar characteristics are grouped together and any <strong>defective cells<\/strong> are replaced prior to assembling new packs. Finally, <strong>battery management systems (BMS)<\/strong> are installed, with their logic adapted to the heterogeneous nature of these reconditioned conjuntos.   <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When it&#8217;s time to retire <strong>batteries <\/strong>after their <strong>second life<\/strong>, the <strong>recycling <\/strong>phase begins \u2014 a key step in the <strong>circular <\/strong>approach. First, <strong>mechanical shredding<\/strong> is used to separate <strong>casings <\/strong>and <strong>structural materials.<\/strong> Then, through <strong>hydrometallurgical <\/strong>or <strong>pyrometallurgical <\/strong>processes, critical metals like <strong>lithium<\/strong>, <strong>cobalt<\/strong>, and <strong>nickel <\/strong>are extracted with sufficient <strong>purity <\/strong>to feed new manufacturing cycles.   This <strong>reverse flow<\/strong> drastically reduces the extraction of <strong>virgin raw materials<\/strong> and minimizes the generation of <strong>hazardous waste.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sernauto.es\/sala-de-prensa\/noticias\/la-bateria-de-automocion-ejemplo-de-economia-circular\">circular economy<\/a><\/strong> model offers multiple advantages. <strong>Environmentally<\/strong>, it avoids <strong>CO\u2082 <\/strong>emissions associated with mining and metal refining. <strong>Economically<\/strong>, <strong>second-life modules <\/strong>can cost up to <strong>40 % less<\/strong> than <strong>new batteries<\/strong>, lowering<strong> the levelized cost of energy (LCOE)<\/strong> for <strong>BESS <\/strong>projects. Moreover, building a <strong>value chain<\/strong> focused on <strong>diagnostics<\/strong>, <strong>reconditioning<\/strong>, and <strong>recycling <\/strong>fosters <strong>specialized job <\/strong>creation.   <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Nonetheless, barriers to mass adoption remain. The lack of <strong>uniform standards<\/strong> for assessing and certifying<strong> battery health <\/strong>complicates their homologation across different markets.<strong> Reverse logistics<\/strong>\u2014with secure transport and interim storage\u2014pose both operational and financial challenges. Likewise, the inherent <strong>heterogeneity <\/strong>of <strong>second-life cells<\/strong> demands extremely detailed and efficient <strong>quality-control protocols.<\/strong>   <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Looking ahead, <strong>digitalization <\/strong>and the development of <strong>electronic passports<\/strong> for each battery promise to enhance <strong>traceability <\/strong>and simplify <strong>second-life <\/strong>and <strong>recycling <\/strong>operations. Simultaneously,<strong> advances in chemical recovery technologies <\/strong>forecast higher <strong>purity <\/strong>levels in recovered materials, driving a<strong> truly sustainable cycle. <\/strong>The <strong>circular economy<\/strong> applied to <strong>energy storage<\/strong> not only extends the utility of <strong>batteries <\/strong>but also emerges as a <strong>cornerstone <\/strong>for the <strong>transition <\/strong>to a <strong>100 % renewable<\/strong> energy system.  <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:
